About Simon

Simon Paine has been a freelance Production Sound Mixer since 1997. Based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, this fully bilingual mixer has done countless local productions in both English and French as well as working in countries around the world including Africa, Switzerland, Belgium and the United Kingdom- to name a few. His projects have included all sorts of productions including Documentary, Drama, Reality, Lifestyle and Corporate.

Simon’s path into Location Sound started back at Dawson College in Montreal. While attending, Simon decided to check out the campus radio station. After starting out as a DJ he then took an interest in the production side of things, spending countless hours playing in the studio. Within a few months he became the Station Manager. At the same time he worked part time for the college as the Sound Mixer for all the shows that came to the campus. Mixing everything from Jazz and Bluegrass to Rock and Hip Hop was a real learning experience. He soon realized he was spending more time in the Campus Radio Station then in classes, so he decided maybe it was time to re-focus where he wanted his education and future career to go. The art of “Sound” was becoming increasingly attractive!

Simon enrolled in the 2-year Radio Broadcasting program at Algonquin College in Ottawa. While there, Simon won awards for “Best Radio Program” and “Best Production Skills”. The last semester of the program featured a 6-week job placement in the field. Instead of applying at the local radio stations, Simon went to a TV production company to focus on Audio Post-Production. After a few weeks in the studio, Simon was asked to try his hand at “Location Sound” after another sound person cancelled last minute. Simon jumped at the chance to use his sound production skills outside of a studio. On his way to meet the director, he was advised not to mention he’d never done location sound. Simon was handed a bag of equipment- most of which he’d never seen before- and on the drive to the shoot location, he quickly figured it all out. After a long but successful day of location sound recording, the company was so impressed with the job Simon did, that they hired him on to finish the project. And Simon enjoyed himself so much, he decided that he never wanted to work in a studio again! A Production Sound mixer was born!

One gig lead to another and as his name spread around the industry Simon became more in demand. Along the way he picked up skills in all sorts of production styles and is now ready to take on your next project. Whether it includes coordinating numerous wireless mic frequencies with multi-track recording on a reality show, or mixing and booming on the go for a documentary, Simon Paine Location Sound has the skills, experience and equipment to make your next production sound it’s best!
